Challenge: Thestrals

Sorry if anyone tried something like one of these already. I haven't had the chance to read all of today's drabbles yet.

Title: Evidence
House: Ravenclaw
Word Count: 100
Characters: Hagrid, the Gryffindors.


Draco Malfoy was dead. Hagrid had not liked the heartless little snob, as much as Hagrid could dislike anyone, still mourning the departure of his sweet little Beaky. Maybe that was why someone had murdered him - to protect innocent creatures like Buckbeak. Maybe…

But no. Killing was wrong, and the murderer had to be found and punished.

He watched the students cross the lawn. Parvati and Lavender were chatting animatedly and didn't even blink. Neville looked slightly queasy. And Harry opened his mouth to alert Ron of the creature in his pathway.

Hermione's haughty voice beat him to it.

"Blue?"

"No."

"Green?"

"No."

"Yellow?"

Wincing. "Too bright."

"Er - how about red?"

"Nope."

"Maybe… purple?"

"You have got to be kidding me."

"Tssss… Fuchsia?"

"Your arse will be fuchsia if you try it!"

"Fine, fine! You can be bloody invisible, then!"

"What's the point of creating us, then?"

"Right." A cough. "People who have seen death will be able to see you."

"Why?"

"Because you'll be the death of me, that's why! See? At least you'll be able to see each other!"

A sniff. "So what colour will we be to others?"

"They can bloody well decide for themselves."

It's black.

I can see that.

What on earth would choose to be black?

Well, some creatures are like that.

So it appears. Black body, black mane. Slick as dragon's skin. And then those creepy eyes.

Hm, yes. It's a bad omen, you know.

What is?

Well, seeing it, of course.

Oh. I can imagine. Merlin's beard, look at that ugly muzzle.

Yes. I wouldn't like to get on its bad side.

No, something like that could definitely give you an ugly bite.


The two Thestrals huddled together and tried to look their most invisible as Severus Snape stalked by.

Lol, no, sorry. Actually, I'd started the dialogue with simply "Black" at first, and then I thought, no, everybody will be thinking about Sirius. Seems I haven't managed to avoid it after all. But then, maybe you're a bit prejudiced... *pets your icon* Aww. :-) Thank you for commenting!

Hee! Very glad it amused you! I don't think it's got anything to do with gullibility, just the fact of having just read tons of drabbles that looked at it from the other POV. And you didn't think I put that colour-drabble right before this one by coincidence, did you? *g* If read separately, this drabble really isn't worth much, so I should thank all the other authors for putting your mind into the, er, "wrong" line of thought. ;-)

oh, damn, that's good. I love the Snape one (went to comment), and then discovered the first one!

and can't decide which I like best! the Snape one suckered me perfectly, as did the Hagrid one
