Pay the Piper

Title: Pay the Piper
House: Gryffindor
Word Count: 100
Author's Notes & Ramblings: Thanks to [info]sparrohawk for suggesting the title.

Voldemort was dead, finally. Nearly all his Death Eaters had been killed attempting to protect him; the rest were in Azkaban.

Save one, who still hid in Diagon Alley.

Harry had to go all the way to Germany to find a wizard who had the skills to make what he needed. He raised it to his lips and blew.

The rats came tumbling from the shops, down the cobbles, rushing headlong to the river's edge. Great rats, small rats, lean rats, brawny rats; Harry only stopped piping when he saw a rat with a silver foreleg plunge into the water.

I knew if you did one of these it'd be damned good. As soon as I saw this challenge, I thought of "Briar Nose". My assumption was right! This is beautiful.

Yesssss! Oh, it's the detail of Harry going to Germany, it's the sequence of "Great rats, small rats..." etc., it's the last line and the precise use of the words "silver foreleg." It's all of that. Lovely.

Wow. That's brilliant. Did I mention that you're amazing recently? I think so. If I didn't, let me reiterate that you are.

Trust Peter to be the only one still alive and kicking. The hider and biter in shadows, finally trapped by a very old magic. Super. (All too likely, too, that it's Harry who gets stuck with clean-up duty, or is the only one who sees it's needed now.)

Really liked that.

Excellent retelling of a story that's just right for the books! Loved the descriptive details - surprising how much you managed to fit into a small drabble.
